Your Heart is Bigger Than You Believe

Your Heart is Bigger Than You Believe
When we practice backbending asanas we are physically exploring how to expand our heart space — opening and strengthening the chest, shoulders, upper back, upper arms. On a more subtle level we are also connecting with our heart centred qualities — love, kindness, joy, compassion, forgiveness.

As human beings we have a tendency to keep our hearts quite small and protected. It’s almost like we believe we have a certain amount of heart and love to give in this lifetime. We are good at loving our chosen circle of beings but anyone outside of that receives something else.

This week I’ve been thinking a lot about the Dalai Lama, his teachings and the impact that he has on the world. What I think is so special about him is that he reminds us of our true capacity for love. He is so kind and friendly and understanding — and he reminds us that we have this potential too. It is possible to live in this world with a full, open and awakened heart.

What I have always found so interesting about him is that his life, and his story, is full of heartbreak and challenge. He has so many reasons to be angry, bitter and hateful — but he chooses not to be. He chooses not to let the circumstances of his life harden him and keep him small. He chooses to stay open and loving. A very beautiful reminder that although we cannot choose want happens to us, we can always choose how to move forward.

So take a moment of pause — take a deep breath — bring your attention to heart — and remind yourself of how much love is there, how much goodness is there, how much limitless potential you have within you, that you often forget. Don’t let your heart be small. Let yourself expand — and grow — and reconnect with your huge capacity for love.
